On August 26, 1958, the American Line Builders Apprenticeship and Training (ALBAT) Committee began as a cooperative labor-management program funded by the American Line Builders Chapter of NECA together with IBEW Fourth and Sixth Districts.

This unique educational partnership pulls together the right people, technologies, processes and expertise. Fresh thinking delivers a world-class program for training individuals in skills needed to perform outside electrical construction and utility work.

ALBAT is a leader in preparing program participants to compete in a 21st-century economy. Our unique approach keeps pace with advancing technologies, innovations in training and human resource development.

Located on a sprawling 17-acre campus in Medway, Ohio, ALBAT’s state-of-the-art training facility proudly serves two central districts of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. That shows the program’s reach and the standards it works to. In the IBEW Fourth District, ALBAT performs the training for Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. ALBAT serves the IBEW Sixth District in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

ALBAT’s advantage as an apprenticeship provides the opportunity for individuals seeking highly-skilled, high-paying jobs and for employers seeking to build a qualified workforce. Our programs are built on providing flexible training that combines job-related technical instruction with structured on-the-job learning experiences.

We are proud to train the top electricians in the following programs: Cable Splicing, Outside Line, Substation, Traffic Signal, Transmission and URD (Underground Residential Distribution).

Due to the nature of outside electrical construction work, workers must move from place to place as the job advances. Line apprentices also travel between areas so they can help a job progress and gain diversity of work experience required to become a competent journeyman. Missouri Valley Line Constructors Apprenticeship Training Program was established in 1964 as a not-for-profit entity to ensure that the electrical industry of a steady supply of qualified workers.

Because local unions are often not in a position to offer the diversity of work required or reasonably continuous employment of apprentices, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) signed an agreement with Missouri Valley Line Constructors Apprenticeship Training Program permission to govern all matters of apprenticeship and training.

The apprenticeship program based in Indianola, Iowa, is one of seven locations operated by the organization. The others are in the states of Minnesota, Missouri. Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

The Iowa program occupies a training facility, which includes an outdoor pole yard, located in Indianola, Iowa. The Iowa program trains thousands of apprentice linemen, traffic signal technicians and substation technicians each year.

Northeastern Apprenticeship Training was created in 1968 by the IBEW and NECA in order to prepare people to become Union Journeyman Lineman in the Outside Construction Industry. We are committed to providing the best training available to our own apprentices and to any IBEW Journey Level Worker looking to upgrade their training to become more in their field.

NEAT operates independently but is run by a joint board of IBEW and NECA members. The program sits under the electrical training ALLIANCE as a national effort and is registered with and monitored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.

One of the many responsibilities that NEAT must fulfill is to have a workforce large enough to keep up with the constant growth of the Outside Electrical Construction Industry in the Northeast. In order to do that, we are continually looking for applicants who are self-motivated and capable of performing both the mental and physical aspects of our work.

Despite the uncertainty of our times, the hardworking men and women of the IBEW and NECA proudly serve our communities by building and maintaining the electrical systems around the clock. NW Line JATC is honored to be a vital contributor by providing men and women the necessary training required to become professional journeymen.

It is by no means an easy job. Construction Linemen and Powerline Clearance Tree Trimmers work long and arduous hours in high-risk situations throughout all types of environmental conditions- from midnight emergency responses to cringe-worthy working heights.

Not everyone has what it takes to be a part of this industry. Paired with thousands of hours of job training and years of schooling, one must have true grit and determination to succeed. All that said, it is one of the most rewarding, well-respected and challenging career fields a person can enter.
